About Our Work in Franklin County

Concrete in Franklin County, Alabama

Franklin County is one of the more visually dramatic parts of our service area. The northern edge runs into the Bankhead foothills and the southern half drops toward the river bottoms around Red Bay and Vina, which means the concrete work here ranges from flat ag-country slabs to steep-lot retaining walls and bluff-edge driveways. We've spent years figuring out how Franklin County soils and grades behave, and that experience shows up in the way our slabs hold.

Russellville is the population center and where most of our city work happens. The east side of town has steady infill — newer homes need driveways, garage floors and patios — while older neighborhoods around downtown need a lot of driveway and sidewalk replacement. The original slabs in those neighborhoods are often forty or fifty years old, poured thin without proper base, and they don't take repair well. The honest fix is a tear-out and a fresh four-inch slab on compacted gravel with the joints in the right places.

Phil Campbell and the smaller communities up toward Hodges and Belgreen are mostly rural work. Long approach driveways, shop and barn slabs, storm shelters, and the occasional new-build foundation. The Phil Campbell tornado in 2011 left a lasting impact on construction priorities here, and we still see steady demand for shelter pads and reinforced slab work as a result. Red Bay and Vina sit closer to the Mississippi line and lean more agricultural — equipment pads, grain-bin foundations, and rural driveway upgrades for properties that have moved from gravel to concrete.

The Dismals Canyon area and the bluff country around Phil Campbell are where shotcrete becomes useful. When a hillside above a driveway is failing, or a building lot needs a vertical concrete face to make a buildable pad, you can't form and pour conventional concrete on the steep angles — it has to be sprayed in place. We run wet-mix and dry-mix shotcrete rigs and have completed a number of slope-stabilization jobs in Franklin County's harder-to-build terrain.

Commercial work in Franklin County is concentrated along Highway 43 in Russellville and the smaller commercial pockets in Red Bay and Phil Campbell. Convenience stores, medical offices, contractor yards and small retail buildings. We pour the foundations, the slabs, the aprons and the sidewalks, and we coordinate directly with the general contractor's schedule so the framer isn't waiting on us.
